Japanese chicken wings are an absolute staple of Aichi prefecture, specifically Nagoya and these live up to the hype. However, the first thing that one notices about this treat is just how elaborate and well thought out the packaging is. Every inch of the gold trimmed box and packaging screams Nagoya, specifically referencing the golden fish-dolphins on top of Nagoya castle. Jagariko is known for having many puns on their packaging and this one does not disappoint. From puns related to Nagoya dialect, to other plays on words, this packaging does not disappoint. My personal favorite is on one of the individual bags it depicts two of Nagoyas fish-dolphins kissing and it says あいちてる(Aichi-teiru). In Japanese 愛してる(Aishi-teru) roughly means “I love you” so the pun changed (Aishi) to (Aichi). Aichi is the name of the prefecture which houses Nagoya where the Fish-Dolphins are famous. Funny right?
Anyways, as for the flavor itself it is certainly recognizable as Nagoya’s peppery chicken wings. It is mildly salty and full of potato and pepper flavor. As an American myself, I find that the combination of potato mixed with peppery chicken wings results in an almost uncanny resemblance to American Thanksgiving mashed potatoes and gravy. I defy you to tell me that it doesn’t taste exactly like that. Maybe my family just used Nagoya chicken wings as the secret ingredient in the mashed potatoes every year.
